Robert Erlanger
Robert began practicing law in 1985 as a litigation associate for a 100+ attorney general practice law firm. At a smaller, high-powered firm, he represented companies sued for negligence under insurance policies but also began to successfully represent plaintiffs in the same type of lawsuits. Robert formed his own firm in February 2003.
Robert has substantial experience in both New York state and federal courts. He has handled many, many different kinds of lawsuits that settled or resulted in jury verdicts: construction site accidents; wrongful death from mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure; defective products; international air travel injuries; falls caused by dangerous conditions on properties; negligent operation and security; civil rights violations (hostile workplace, discrimination, false arrest, and excessive use of force); defamation; pedestrian knockdowns; malicious prosecution; and breach of contract.
Robert’s highest jury verdict, $15 million ($10M compensation, $5M punitive damages), was awarded by a federal court jury against a non-U.S. airline for its role in illegally flying an American child out of the country in violation of a court custody order.
In 2012, Robert was selected as a Member, The National Trial Lawyers, Top 100 Trial Lawyers in New York. The National Trial Lawyers is a professional organization composed of the premier trial lawyers from across the country who exemplify superior qualifications as civil plaintiff or criminal defense trial lawyers. Robert was first selected as a New York Metro SuperLawyer in 2006 for General Litigation and then in 2009 through 2025 for Plaintiff’s Personal Injury. SuperLawyers is a highly respected attorney ratings organization that identifies the top 5% of lawyers from more than 70 different practice areas for their unmatched commitment, skills, and client satisfaction. Robert is a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, established in 1993, one of the most prestigious groups of trial lawyers in the United States. Membership is limited to attorneys who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements.
For 18 years, Robert was on the volunteer mediation panel for the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, where he successfully mediated cases involving negligence, insurance coverage, copyright infringement, breach of commercial and employment contracts, and workplace discrimination.
In prior lives, Robert worked in management for two once prominent airlines, Trans World Airlines and Pan American World Airways. At Pan Am, he was System Director of Marketing Planning, in charge of the Airline’s marketing plan and market research. At TWA, he worked in aircraft scheduling and passenger marketing.
Robert graduated with a BA in History from Columbia College, where he swam on the varsity swimming team, and a Master of International Affairs from the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs, with a specialization in international business. He received his law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he was a Belkin Scholar and Research Editor of the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal. Robert was a summer law clerk for the Hon. H. Lee Sarokin, U.S. District Court of New Jersey and interned with the New York City Law Department and Law Department of the Port Authority of NY & NJ.
Robert is admitted to practice law in New York and before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and New Jersey, the U.S. Appeals Courts for the Second and Third Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. He is member of the New York City Bar Association.
